The Reinisch Family (from circovino.com)
A brief 30-minute drive south of Vienna will bring you to the door of Johanneshof Reinisch. Located in Austria's historic Thermenrgion, the Reinisch family is producing wine in the fourth generation with the current winemaking team comprised of three brothers: Hannes, Christian and Michael. With a 2,000 year legacy of wine growing in the region, the Reinisch's maintain Thermenregion traditions with vineyards planted to 65 % red and 35 % white vines. The Theremregion aquired this name, in part, from geothermal hot springs that flow under the vineyards here, contributing to favorable wine growing conditions for finicky varieties like Pinot Noir. Best known for their excellent Pinot Noir and St. Laurent, there is a particular focus at Johanneshof Reinisch on the Burgundy varieties. Their Pinot Noir vines grow in vineyards from both the stony, alluvial gravel soils of Tattnedorf near the winery and the elevated, nutrient rich soils of Gumpoldskirchen. As a family that tends its own vine nursery, local grapes and traditions are important, and in their Gumpoldskirchen vineyards the indigenous grape varieties Rotgipfler and Zierfandler are cultivated. There are roughly 100 hectares (247 acres) remaining in the world of these two indigenous white varieties making the Reinisch's offerings an unusual glimpse into Austria's wine roots. The Reinisch family farms organically and takes their thoughtful approach from vineyard to cellar to bottle.
Terroir
The basis of all wine's taste is the concept of “terroir,” which means the interplay of soil and microclimate. With nearly 2,000 hours of sun per year, the Thermenregion winegrowing region surrounding Tattendorf and Gumpoldskirchen is one of Austria's sunniest and driest regions. This guarantees that grapes grown here quite regularly attain optimum ripeness and that variety-specific aromas develop to their fullest. The constant movement of air between the plain in the east and the chain of hills to the north quickly dries the plants after precipitation, keeping the grapes healthy and protecting them from mold right up to peak ripeness. The soil, characterized by brown earth, alluvial gravel and conglomerates, offers ideal conditions for the cultivation of high-quality wine grapes.

The History of the Estate:
Tradition meets the modern
We are the fourth generation of our family to make wine in Tattendorf. At the beginning, in the year 1923, the area we used to cultivate our grapevines consisted of a plot just barely half a hectare in size in the Ried Mitterfeld vineyard. Today, we grow grapes on ca. 40 ha of vineyards, mostly in the area around Tattendorf as well as in Gumpoldskirchen and Guntramsdorf. 1995 saw the construction of the new winemaking facility of Johanneshof Reinisch, at the address “Im Weingarten 1” near Tattendorf. This provided ideal conditions for the production of fine wines. We now have the most modern cellar technology for all aspects of winemaking, including sorting equipment, electronically regulated presses, facilities for monitored fermentation, and a large barrel cellar which was constructed according to the traditional method using old bricks.
