In Japan there are two major gift giving seasons: O-chuugen (in July) and O-seibo around christmas time in December.
Both o-chuugen and o-seibo are like a thank you gift to express gratitude for favors received during the year. Traditionally these gifts were personally delivered but today it has become accepted to send the gifts (including a so called noshigami) by delivery service.
