Angoris

Tenuta Angoris is one of the most prestigious wineries of Friuli located in the hamlet of Angoris, close to Cormons in North West Italy, where the best and most acclaimed Italian white wines are produced.

Their history started in 1648 when the Emperor of Austria Ferdinand III donated 300 fields of fertile soils to Officer Locatello Locatelli for merits gained during battle in the Thirty-Year War. From this time on, the quiet woods, green hills and gentle vineyards of the Angoris estate became a retreat for royalty from throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After three centuries the Tenuta di Angoris is today managed, with renewed enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit, by another Locatelli family (not related to the original Locatello): Claudia Locatelli restyled the wines and the overall look and philosophy of the Tenuta di Angoris.

The estate’s land covers 620 hectares; 130 hectares of which are covered in vine, the rest divided between forested land and other agricultural uses. Given the vicinity to both the sea and the mountains, the vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate, characterized by good ventilation, important to defend the plants from fungus, and a strong diurnal temperature variation that allows vibrant acidity in the resulting wines.

The typical marl and sandstone, soil, loclly called “ponca”, also plays an important role: with its high pH, it is rich in calcium carbonate that gives a particular mineral note to the wines.

The varietals for white wines are the local traditional ones: Ribolla Giallo, Friulano, Pinot Grigio, plus some international widely planted in this region such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The reds are made from the native Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Schioppettino but also from Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Wines are made with 100% estate grown grapes coming from vineyards in the Collio - unquestionable home to Italy’s top white wines but also producing very interesting reds. The wines’ complexity, power, structure, elegance and depth clearly express the top potential of Friuli’s hillside lands.

The Angoris wines are made to exemplify the richer and more complex style of wine that the hillside vineyards of Friuli naturally give: lush and creamy, while still mineral and with refreshing acidity. These are wines that taste great now and are made to evolve another 5 to 10 years.
