Around 30 km south of Vienna, the wine estate Johanneshof Reinisch is nestled amongst the vineyards near the village of Tattendorf. The surrounding region has a distinguished tradition of wine-making, and today this geologically fascinating area on the western edge of the great Pannonian Plain numbers among the country's most prominent winegrowing centers.
Tradition meets the modern
A family business for four generations, beginning in 1923 when the area used to cultivate grapevines consisted of a plot just barely half a hectare in size in the Ried Mitterfeld vineyard. Today, grapes are grown on ca. 40 ha of vineyards, mostly in the area around Tattendorf as well as in Gumpoldskirchen and Guntramsdorf. 1995 saw the construction of the new winemaking facility of Johanneshof Reinisch, at the address "Im Weingarten 1" near Tattendorf. This provided ideal conditions for the production of fine wines. They now also utilize the most modern cellar technology for all aspects of winemaking, including sorting equipment, electronically regulated presses, facilities for monitored fermentation, and a large barrel cellar which was constructed according to the traditional method using old bricks. Terroir
The basis of all wine's taste is the concept of "terroir," which means the interplay of soil and microclimate. With nearly 2,000 hours of sun per year, the Thermenregion winegrowing region surrounding Tattendorf and Gumpoldskirchen is one of Austria's sunniest and driest regions. This guarantees that grapes grown here quite regularly attain optimum ripeness and that variety-specific aromas develop to their fullest. The constant movement of air between the plain in the east and the chain of hills to the north quickly dries the plants after precipitation, keeping the grapes healthy and protecting them from mold right up to peak ripeness. The soil, characterized by brown earth, alluvial gravel and conglomerates, offers ideal conditions for the cultivation of high-quality wine grapes.
